Holiday & Travel Guide For Marrakech, Morocco

Sightseeing

Marrakech is a medieval city, with its historic Palace and Saadian Tombs. You'll be amazed at the architecture of this building that houses the Museum of Marrakech, with its wonderful works of art exhibited inside. Unfortunately there's absolutely no access to the mosque for non Muslims. Marrakech is a busy and lively place, full of sounds and colour. It is often very hectic so if you want to escape from it for a while take an excursion from the fantastic Ouzoud Waterfall where you'll meet plenty of local monkeys. While relaxing with a drink in the outdoor restaurant, it is a great spot for photo opportunities or even to have a camel ride to the desert and spend a night camping out under the Moroccan stars. There are many smaller cities close by that can fill your days with some terrific sights if you would like to explore this enchanting country. An afternoon at the Square of the Dead is beautiful, with snake charmers, musicians and story tellers to entertain all the family. Before you depart Marrakech, fly over town at a hot air balloon, then it is a superb experience and very memorable with some fantastic views and plenty of photo opportunities.

Beaches

Marrakech isn't a beach resort, but if you want to unwind away from the bustling city then the harbour town of Essaouira is the closest beach to Marrakech, where you could experience some great water sports such as kite sailing and windsurfing and its broad sandy shore. It may be a little windy, but if the sun is at its hottest a tiny breeze is more than welcome, it is also possible to attempt some horse riding along this very tidy beach.

Buying

Shopping in Marrakech is an exciting adventure, haggle with the locals in the big open air Bazaars selling everything from Souvenirs to gorgeous handmade rugs, leather and hand crafted gold jewelry. Take in the sights and sounds of this hectic bustling place, if you don't intend to buy do not haggle as the natives may get quite aggressive over it, but if you do haggle you'll be sure to get a bargain or two. Should you prefer fixed price shopping with significantly less hustle and bustle then you'll find some very nice fixed price stores in the town.

Eating

Tours from Marrakech is quite tasty and very varied with Arabic, Mediterranean and African influences. Many spices are used in the traditional dishes; these can be discovered in several restaurants that are authentic, the most popular dish being pigeon dish. Many genuine dishes are cooked with couscous rice, spicy meat and delicious vegetables. You'll find the smaller more active restaurants serving the locals tend to be the much better places for traditional cuisine, but there are loads of restaurants that sell international foods and fast food outlets selling baguettes full of meat and salad are available all around the towns. All of the hotels cater to the tourist market.
